FUTURE

In 2012, as the Olympics trundled into town, the newly formed Association for the Regulation of Semantic Errors (ARSE) deemed that the name 'Old Street' had connotations of decay and obtuseness which didn't fit with the dream of excellence and success represented by the world's foremost athletes. As a result, the Board of Trustees for ARSE came together for a meeting on April 14th 2008 and it was decided in a unanimous vote to rename this busy thoroughfare 'Brand New Street'. They intended to call it 'New Street' but there was already a street with this name in nearby Whitechapel.

Shoreditch - Home of the Cow in a Pot

PAST

Bovril was manufactured in London from 1884 initially from a small factory located in Old Street, Shoreditch. The product was often promoted through large adverts; in 1909 the first Bovril electric advertising sign was erected in Piccadilly Circus. This billboard advert was designed and produced by Benson's advertising agency in 1940. During the Second World War Bovril was promoted as a nourishing drink, a spread for toast and a flavouring for the somewhat bland diet of rationed food.
